Cigar Sizes, Shapes, and Vitolas

Cigars come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, but understanding their terminology can elevate your appreciation of the craft. From size to vitola and even wrapper colors, here’s an overview of six popular cigar sizes, their benefits, and the history behind their names.

What is a Vitola?

Vitola refers to the combination of a cigar’s size, shape, and name. Each vitola encompasses a specific set of dimensions, which includes length (measured in inches) and ring gauge (diameter measured in 64ths of an inch). Vitolas also consider the cigar’s form—whether it’s cylindrical, tapered, or box-pressed—and even the names assigned to different combinations.

1. Robusto

One of the most common and versatile vitolas, the Robusto measures approximately 5 inches in length with a 50-ring gauge. Known for its short smoking time of 30-45 minutes, it is perfect for quick yet satisfying sessions. Robustos are often wrapped in various color grades, from light Connecticut shade (golden) to dark Maduro (deep brown), each influencing the flavor intensity.

2. Toro

The Toro, measuring 6 inches with a 50-ring gauge, is considered a step up from the Robusto in length. Its consistent burn and flavor profile make it a go-to for enthusiasts seeking an hour-long experience. A common wrapper color for Toros is Colorado (medium brown), offering a balance of sweetness and spice.

3. Churchill

Named after British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who famously enjoyed long cigars, this vitola is typically 7 inches long with a 47-ring gauge. Churchills often feature dark wrappers, like Oscuro (almost black), for a full-bodied smoke. With a smoking time exceeding an hour, this vitola is perfect for leisurely enjoyment.

4. Corona

The Corona, a classic vitola, measures approximately 5.5 inches by a 42-ring gauge. Slimmer than a Robusto, it offers a balanced wrapper-to-filler ratio, enhancing flavor nuances. Corona cigars are often wrapped in natural or darker shades like Colorado Maduro, adding complexity to their medium-length smoking experience.

5. Torpedo

The Torpedo stands out with its pointed head, allowing smokers to control the draw and concentrate flavor. Measuring around 6.5 inches with a 52-ring gauge, Torpedoes are a symbol of cigar craftsmanship. Often paired with oily Maduro or Oscuro wrappers, they deliver rich, bold flavors.

6. Lancero

This slender vitola, measuring 7.5 inches by a 38-ring gauge, is known for its high wrapper-to-filler ratio, offering a concentrated taste experience. Often wrapped in lighter Connecticut shades or darker Maduro colors, the Lancero has an elegant appearance and is favored by seasoned smokers for its refined flavor.

Shapes and Color Names in Cigar Wrappers

Cigar shapes fall into two categories: Parejos (straight-sided cigars like the Robusto and Toro) and Figurados (cigars with tapered or unusual shapes, such as the Torpedo). Wrapper colors also play a significant role in the cigar’s flavor and appearance. Common names include:

  • Claro: Light green or golden hues, offering mild, smooth flavors.

  • Colorado: Medium brown, balanced in strength and sweetness.

  • Maduro: Dark brown, rich and robust in flavor.

  • Oscuro: Almost black, delivering bold, intense notes.

Choosing the right cigar size and vitola depends on your preferences for smoking time, flavor intensity, and draw. Understanding the nuances of shapes, sizes, and wrapper colors ensures a more immersive experience.
